Botox has become a well used cosmetic enhancement over the last few years by ridding people of age line and wrinkles; despite how often this treatment is used, few people understand the method it uses. In order to appreciate just what this is we need a brief history lesson into its discovery, quite a while ago now. The substance is derived from Botulinum toxin, discovered nearly five decades ago; originally the purpose of this was to treat neurological disorders.

Then a few decades later in 1989, the Federal Drug Administration in America finally approved its use to treat disorders associated with vision; conditions that caused uncontrollable blinking and crossed eyes were the first people to benefit. In the year 2000 was given the all clear for the of treatment cervical dystonia. this eases the pain from serious contractions in the shoulders and neck, but it was also given the ok to be used on another more unusual eye condition. The strange discovery they made quite by accident was that botox helps to reduce the visible lines between the eyebrows; it was after this discovery that it officially came into existence and was FDA approved for cosmetic use in 2002.

Botox has a paralyzing affect when it is injected into areas of the forehead which control the muscles that cause frowning; in time frown lines gradually soften and subside if sufficient treatments are given. With continued use, the frown lines in most instances will completely vanish but the same effect can be found in lines at the sides of the eyes, mouth and other forehead lines. The form used in these injections is one that has been cleaned up and diluted, posing no threat; these treatments are only a fraction of the true strength which, in other forms, could make us seriously unwell.

Of course we all like to laugh and obviously use our faces for other gestures but the muscles controlling this are the cause of the line we see and obviously, these injections can stop this. These lines are formed on our faces after years of wear and tear; when these creases become permanent, no kind of skin cream can get rid of them but this treatment can eliminate them temporarily. These botox injections are used directly into the muscles that control facial expressions and paralyzing them for a short period, effectively making it almost impossible for a person to smile; people who have regular treatment often look as though they are dummies because they cannot smile properly or make other facial gestures that we tend to rely on.

A person who has undergone this treatment still has enough movement to provide some expressions but they are limited; because most of the wrinkles and creases have all but disappeared, it appears that the person is younger than their true years. However, this cosmetic treatment is still expensive; with injections in the low to very high hundreds of dollars each, it looks to remain expensive for some time to come. Whether there are any long term effects from continued use of botox is still unknown as the treatment is still to new but for those people who do use it, it doesn\'t seem to matter.
